About Lower Austria

Lower Austria is the largest state of Austria and the second largest by population. Its capital is st. pölten due to Vienna being its own separate state. In the north the state borders with the Czech republic. And in the north and north east the state borders with Slovakia. In the south east the state borders with the state of Burgenland and in the south to Styria. In the west lowerAustria borders with upper Austria.

Lower Austria is Divided into four regions. Waldviertel, weinviertel, mostviertel and industrieviertel. The division of the 4 regions has to do with the history of Lower Austria, nowadays however the regions work together and overlap with nature as well.

The geography of lower Austria consists mostly on rolling hills with the Kalk alps making up the higher mountains in the state. With mountains up to 2000 meters above sea level. Notable mountains in lower Austria are the rax and the schneeberg which is the tallest mountain in lower Austria. the hilly geography makes this part of Austria perfect fort the production of wine and most. Giving the names to the regions respectively.

The Danube river is the most important river in Lower Austria. flowing through the narrow valleys and 2 basins, the tullner basin and of course the Vienna basin. After which the river leaves Austria.

In Lower Austria, the Danube transforms from the mountain river to the lowland river, ending its upper reaches. However, this is only conditionally comprehensible today due to the many powerplants

 Lower Austria is a state where only few lakes are found. The largest natural lakes are the lunzer see and the erlauf see. But in compare to the lakes of other Austrian states these lakes are not major tourist attractions.

What lower Austria doesn’t lack of are natural caves. In the state a total of 4082 caves are categorized.

Tourism inside of lower Austria has unlike the other Austrian states a large dependency on the day trip tourists that come from the capital city Vienna. Never the less it is of great economical importance for the state.

Towns,Lakes and mountains

St.pölten, is a nice town to visit for a day with churches nice squares and some museums

Baden bei Wien, with a nice and old town center you can enjoy the Austrian culture on a nice summer or spring day. Perfect for a day trip or base from which you can see more of lower-Austria.

The Lunsersee, this lake is perfect to take a walk around on a nice summer or winter day.

The hohewand in the guntensteiner alps, this steep mountain wall is a perfect place for sports such as paragliding. With an amazing view and panorama platform you should pack your bags and come.

   

Ski Resorts of Lower Austria

Lower Austria offers a few ski resorts but the low altitude and the small size makes them just perfect for a day or weekend trip as a nice distraction from the city.

Hochkar, this small ski resort with 19km of slopes is perfect for the locals en Viennese people looking for a nice day trip.

Ötscher, this small ski resort also has 19km of slopes and is mainly used for the same reasons as hochkar.

Kreuzenstein caslte as if taken right out of a fairy tale don’t miss this amazing castle when you are visiting lower Austria

See grotte, this is the largest subterranean lake in Europe and a special experience to go and visit.

Stift heiligenkreutz, one of the beautiful monastery’s that lower Austria has to offer and a definitely must see.

Melk Abbey, not to miss is the famous stift melk and make sure to take a day of time to go and see this magnificent place.

Thayatal national park, along the border with the Czech republic lies this national park. Enjoy the nature take a hike or go biking.

Vienna forest, the Vienna forest or Wienerwald is a national park close to the city of Vienna. Perfect to book a hotel in the Vienna forest if you like to have some rest and of course cheaper prices than in the city directly.
