About Vorarlberg

Vorarlberg is the westernmost state of Austria. and the second smallest after only Vienna. In the north Vorarlberg borders to Germany in the east to it borders the state of Tyrol, in the west it borders Liechtenstein and in the south and west it borders Switzerland. the largest towns in Vorarlberg are Dornbirn almost 50 thousand inhabitants and Feldkirch with 33 thousand inhabitants. Even though these are the largest towns the capital of the state of Vorarlberg is Bregenz with a population close to 30 thousand. Vorarlberg is almost completely mountainous with skiing, hiking and climbing being popular sports in the region. The main rivers in Vorarlberg are the Rhine which is a natural border between Austria and Switzerland. and the ill that runs through the Montafon and Walgau regions. Some notable lakes in Vorarlberg are lake Constance of course but besides that one you also have the Luner lake and the Silvretta lake. As said Vorarlberg is mostly mountainous and some of the mountain ranges are the Silvretta mountains and the Arlberg region.

Winter sports play a large role in the economy of Vorarlberg with ski resorts like the Arlberg region, sport Montafon and the brander Berger alpen. Every year thousands of tourists come to these places to enjoy their winter holiday. Within the skiing resort of Arlberg the modern alpine skiing technique was created and to this day the region has modern skiing facilities.

The town of Damüls has the record to have the highest annual snowfall worldwide with an average of 30.5 feet. Vorarlberg offers a wide range of geographical and scenic diversity within the small state. Form to low lying lake Constance to the high peaks up to 10.866 feet in the Silvretta mountains.

As said the tourist industry employs a considerable number of Vorarlbergers. There are around 12.000 employees working in this tourism which represent approximately 11% of the total workforce. But not only in the winter as mentioned above.

 Towns to visit 

Dornbirn the largest town in Vorarlberg with beautiful squares to eat and enjoy the culture, the Rolls-Royce museum and a beautiful view over the town if you take the cable car just outside of the town in to the mountains.

Feldkirch nice mediaeval town situated in the mountains and hills. You can visit the wild park and the Schattenburg castle.

Bregenz. The capital of Vorarlberg lying on the banks of lake Constance. enjoy the museums and the panoramic view over the city with the cable car.

Lakes to visit 

Lunersee. This beautiful mountain lake is located within the Brandertal and is a perfect place to hike to.

Lake Constance, at this amazing lake you can take a scuba dive, go boating or just enjoy it by walking or dining at the lake side. Take a quick trip over to the German and swiss side and enjoy a international experience.

Silvretta lake. This lake and its dam are a amazing sight to see. It is perfect for hiking and taking in the mountains surrounding the lake itself.

Stausee Kops, the long dam surrounding a large part of the lake creates a amazing place to be and take a walk around the lake.

Vermunt stausee, close to the Silvretta lake another smaller lake lies on the side of a beautiful alpine road with the sharp turns perfect for fans of driving car or motorbike.

Spullersee, the lake is located in the middle of Vorarlberg and offers a great place to take a hike.

Brand brandental, with 55km of slopes and beautiful slopes located in the west of Vorarlberg close to Liechtenstein

Damüls: with 79 km of slopes and the location with the most snow on average each year in the world this is a place not to miss if you come to Vorarlberg.

Ski Arlberg: the largest ski resort in Austria with 305km of slopes partly in the state of Tyrol you can stay at towns such as Lech and enjoy your winter holiday to the fullest. But  don’t expect to be cheap off because here it is skiing with the high class.

Silvretta Montafon, with 182 km of slopes this ski resort is located in the south east of Vorarlberg in the Silvretta mountain range. The ski resort is made up of 4 separate skiing areas.

Bregenzer wald, go and taste the cheese made in the Bregenzer wald and enjoy more culinary specialties on a culinary hike across mountain huts and restaurants.

Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse, located in the Silvretta mountains, this is a dream road for bikers and every car enthusiast just make sure to come in spring or summer because in winter you won’t be able to cross it.

Rappenlochschlucht, walk across nature in the rappenloch canyon. Close to the largest down Dornbirn you can find this canyon and hike along waterfalls and more, just make sure to come in summer
