About Admont Abbey

The Admont Abbey or stift Admont is located in the state Styria. It was founded in the year 1074 making it the oldest existing monastery in Styria. Admont abbey contains the largest monastery library in the world and offers a museum, the museum exhibits include medieval manuscripts, different forms of art and other exhibitions.

Completed in 1776 the abbey library was once called the 8th wonder of the world and is the largest monastic library in the world. The book hall accommodates about 70.000 books and the entire inventory comprises about 200.000 books and scriptures. Among them are more than 1400 medieval manuscripts and 1000 hand printed books.
