About Vienna

Vienna is capital of Austria and functions as the 9th state of Austria. Vienna is the largest city in Austria with a population near 2 million for the primary city and a 2.6 million population within the metropolitan area, this is nearly 1/3th of the entire population in Austria.  Vienna hosts major organizations including the OPEC and united nations. The city is 2nd largest German speaking city in the world after only berlin. Vienna is located in the center of lower-Austria and only borders this other Austrian state. Vienna’s city center is an UNESCO world heritage site. Vienna is known for its high quality of life and regularly ranks in the top 3 most livable cities in the world. Vienna attracts almost 7 million tourists a year which makes it one of the top 20 most visited cities around the world ( 2017 )

The culture in Vienna is one of its best features. Spanning the large history of the city and being the center of power for 100s of years of large parts of central Europe Vienna has produced some of the world famous composers we know today.  Such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Straus and Schoenberg. But not only music Vienna’s tradition in the arts and culture spread itself to theatre opera and the fine arts. When you are visiting Vienna take the time to visit one of the theaters and opera houses  for a concert or opera.

Museums To Visit

There are over 100 museums in Vienna not able to write about them all we highlighted some of the museums here for you.

The Hofburg, the Hofburg palace was home to the Habsbugers until the year 1918 and now functions as a museum, where you can see the crown jewels of the former monarchs and much more.

The museum quarter, this museum complex houses 60 different museums for you to choose from.

Military history museum, within this museum you can find the history of armies throughout history. The uniforms they used as well as the weapons and everything you need at war.

Arthouse Vienna, this museum houses the world’s only permanent exhibitions of the Hundertwasser haus.

Technical museum, in this museum you will get to experience a extraordinary look upon the world of tech.

Natural history museum, this museum has over 30 million objects in its collection and is one of our favorites to visit.

 

Culinary specialities

Wiener schnitzel,  wiener schnitzel is a thin breaded and baked schnitzel made of veal.

Apfelstrudel, Apple strudel consists of an oblong strudel pastry jacket with an apple filling inside. The filling is made of grated cooking apples, sugar, cinnamon, sasins and bread crumbs.

Sachertorte, The cake consists of a dense chocolate cake with a thin layer of apricot jam on top, coated in  dark chocolate icing on the top and sides. It is traditionally served with unsweetened whipped cream.

Naschmarkt, at the naschmarket one can buy fresh fruits and vegetables from around the world, exotic herbs, cheeses, baked goods such as bread Kaiser rolls and torte, seafoods and meat. There are also many small stands and restaurants which offer sushi kebab and traditional Viennese food such as palatschinken kaiserschmarrn or wurst.

Other sights to visit

Stadtpark, to take a break from the busy city life take a few hours to relax in the stadtpark here you can enjoy together with locals before going back to the museums and palaces you want to visit.

The Danube island, this artificial island offers just like the stadtpark a place of relaxation for the Viennese people and for you as tourist take a bike and drive around the island visiting a nice stand to buy some bratwurst.

The Prater, this is a park with attractions for young and old with as  main sight the Vienna Ferris wheel where you can get an amazing view over the city.

Vienna zoo, tiergarten Schönbrunn is the oldest zoo in the world and offers special animals such as the giant panda.

Schönbrunn palace and garden, for over 60 years the Schönbrunn palace has been the most visited tourist site in Vienna. So when you are visiting make sure to go to the Schönbrunn palace and the gardens around the palace.

Austrian parliament building, The exterior of the Austrian Parliament and especially the statue and fountain of Athena is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Vienna.

National library of Austria,  one of the world’s most impressive library you have to make a visit to the this place and if you are a enjoyer of books take time to sit down and take it all in.

Karls kirche, this church is widely considered the most outstanding baroque church in Vienna

Spanish riding school, Not only is it a center for classical dressage, the headquarters offers public performances as well which makes it a great tourist sight to visit.

Stephansplatz,  this square is the geographical center of Vienna and hosts beautiful traditional architecture to grab a bite to eat at this place watching over to the st.stephens cathedral after which this square is named.

St. stephens cathedral, this cathedral is the largest cathedral of Austria. the height of the southern tower is with 136.7 meters the highest cathedral tower in Austria and the 8th highest in the world.
